Curtain lights are the simplest way to make a home feel festive from the inside and from the street. A single window, lit well, often looks more elegant than a whole house covered in color. Here is how to get it right.
Pick one statement window
Start with the window people see first, usually the living room or the one facing the front door. One beautifully lit window reads as intentional. If you want more, repeat the same style and color across windows on the same floor so the facade looks unified.
Measure before you buy
Measure the width of the glass, not the frame, and choose a curtain that covers most of that width. Strands should stop a few inches above the sill so they hang straight rather than pooling. For tall windows, two curtains side by side look better than one stretched panel.
Hang it cleanly
Use small clear adhesive hooks or a tension rod placed inside the frame, close to the glass. Keeping the lights tight to the window reduces reflection and makes the glow visible from outside. Run the cable down the edge of the frame and tuck it behind the curtain or blind.
Choose warm white and a slow mode
Warm white feels classic and pairs with candles and greenery. If your lights have modes, a steady glow or slow fade looks far more refined than fast flashing. Use the timer so the lights come on at dusk and switch off at bedtime without any effort.
Layer inside
Finish the room with a few flameless candles on the sill or a nearby shelf. The combination of a lit window and soft candlelight inside is what makes a home look warm and lived in during the holidays.
